Frequently Asked Questions

Before accepting your assignment, please review the following clarifications from the Office of Municipal Records.

Public Advisory / CaseUnsealed

Are these real cases?

No. Every CaseUnsealed investigation is a work of fiction, created specifically for this interactive detective experience. Some scenarios, investigative techniques, locations, or circumstances may resemble real-world events, but the cases are not recreations of actual unsolved crimes.

The people, agencies, evidence, and official records you encounter are fictional. Any resemblance to actual persons or events is coincidental.

Do I need to download an app?

No downloads, installations, or special software are required. Your entire investigation takes place through ordinary email correspondence with Walter Kessler, our fictional records archivist.

You'll receive your assignment by email, request evidence and supporting records by replying in your own words, and receive documents directly in your inbox. When you're ready, you'll submit your findings by email as well. If you can send and receive email and open common attachments such as PDFs and images, you're ready to investigate.

Can I use AI to solve my cases?

Sure, but where's the fun in that? The most rewarding part of CaseUnsealed is following the clues, connecting the evidence, and reaching your own conclusions.

That said, if you're genuinely stuck, you're welcome to upload the evidence you've received to your favorite AI assistant and ask for a gentle nudge rather than the answer. For example:

“I'm working on this cold case mystery and I'm stuck. Can you review the evidence files and give me a hint without revealing the solution?”

We recommend asking for hints one at a time so you can preserve the mystery. AI assistance is optional, not a requirement.

Is Walter a real person?

He might be out there somewhere, but Walter Kessler, as portrayed in CaseUnsealed, is entirely fictional. He's the records archivist assigned to assist you in retrieving documents from the Tri-State Archives facility.

Walter's correspondence is powered by AI to make the exchange feel like a real investigation. You can write naturally, ask for specific records, follow leads, and clarify requests. Just remember: Walter is your archivist, not your detective partner. The deductions are yours to make.

Do I have to pay anything extra while playing? (In-game purchases)

No. Your subscription includes everything you need to investigate and resolve your assigned cases. There are no in-game purchases, paid hints, evidence unlock fees, or surprise charges for requesting additional records.

Every document needed to solve a case is available within the investigation. Your subscription determines how many new cases you receive, and unused case credits roll over. The mystery may be complicated; the billing won't be.
